What is therapeutic recreation?
Therapeutic recreation, or rec therapy, is a health care profession that utilizes a therapeutic process involving leisure and recreation activities to increase feelings of agency, independence and life satisfaction through programs tailored to individuals or groups. These activities are divided into five domains - mental, physical, emotional, social and spiritual.
The goal of therapeutic recreation is to assess the needs of the individual in each category and create practices to meet those needs based on the values and preferences of the individual.
Our goal at Wise and Well is to maintain or increase the level of independence and overall wellbeing for our clients. Meaning that we want to reduce loneliness through social programming, improve mental and physical stamina through brain and body exercises, assist in emotional health by building a relationship and providing resources for mental health issues and providing spiritual programming tailored to the clients preferences if that is important to them.
